Pakistan and India War

India-Pakistan: A Fragile Calm, Not Peace

1. A Brief 2025 Conflict

  • In May 2025, India launched a precision campaign, Operation Sindoor, striking alleged militant hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians

  • Pakistan reported civilian casualties and claimed to have downed Indian jets; India maintained it targeted only non-civilians

  • After four intense days, a U.S.-brokered ceasefire took effect on May 10, 2025, ending the immediate hostilities

2. Between War and Peace

While there's no declared war, tensions persist:

  • Both sides remain heavily militarized and suspect of each other. Analysts believe that while full-scale war is unlikely, a return to clashes remains on the radar The Times of IndiaThe Guardian.

  • Diplomatic efforts and people-to-people initiatives, like joint humanitarian projects and back-channel talks, offer hope for de-escalation washingtonmorning.com.

  • Still, both countries trade aggressive rhetoric, with warnings and threats still common, especially concerning bilateral disputes like the Indus Waters Treaty, which India suspended in April 2025—a move Pakistan considered dangerously provocative.

3. What's Really Going On?

  • No active war now — but the conflict atmosphere is far from resolved. Military overhang remains, with a high risk of re-escalation.

  • Rhetoric is heating up, nationalist sentiments are being mobilized, and symbolic posturing (like flagpole competitions at the Wagah border) reinforce the deep-rooted rivalry The Guardian.

  • Water, diplomacy, and nukes—disputes over treaty violations and threats of nuclear retaliation over water-sharing raise the stakes ever higher.
